Richard Barrett

Richard was born in Cardiff in 1963. Having grown up by the coast and now established in Yorkshire, the inspiration for his painting is rooted in both land and sea.

Richard says of his work, 'My painting is driven by the elements, by the changing dynamics of weather and light and how this breathes life into the landscape'.

A series of sketches provide an anchor or starting point for each painting. As the work progresses, a more instinctive approach comes into play. Memory and intuition then take over, with the paint being worked from thin washes to thick impasto. Scratching, marking and glazing further help give the work a sense of energy, movement and mystery.

The landscapes that emerge have a suggestive, abstracted quality. They invite the viewer in - to find their own interpretation, their own personal story.
